In 1953 Tom Jobim and his first wife Thereza Hermanny rented the apartment 201 in this building in the Ipanema neighborhood, between the beach and the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. They lived there until 1962, and then moved to a house on Barão da Torre Street, a few blocks away. The apartment had two living rooms and two bedrooms, and the front windows looked straight at the statue of Christ the Redeemer, on top of the Corcovado mountain. |

Within this period, Jobim wrote several songs with his pal Newton Mendonça, including "Desafinado" and "Samba de uma nota só". He composed the "Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro" (Rio de Janeiro Suite) with Billy Blanco, and "Orfeu da Conceição" with Vinicius de Moraes. From the Nascimento Silva Street, the song "Girl from Ipanema" took off towards its worldwide success. There, also, were born the partnerships with Vinicius de Moraes which the female singer Elizete Cardoso interpreted in the Long Play "Canção do Amor Demais". Jobim rehearsed with João Gilberto the tracks for the singer's first record "Chega de Saudade". In 1959, the soprano Lenita Bruno recorded the Long Play "Por toda a minha vida"(All my life through), with cameristic compositions by Jobim and Vinicius. Tom Jobim used to spend some weekends and vacations
in the small family-owned estate in Poço Fundo, Rio de Janeiro
state. There, inspired by the scenery he loved to watch from the windows
of the Nascimento Silva Street apartment, he wrote the song "Corcovado".
After one of those vacations, when he came back home, new constructions
across the street had already hidden the landscape.
